In Medieval England, a kind of clay called pygg replaced the use of expensive metals to manufacture household wares. Housewives would drop a saved coin into one of these clay jars. Over many years, people forgot the origin of the Old English term "pygg." 19th century English potters accepting requests for piggy banks produced containers in the shape of little pigs, which charmed shoppers and established the piggy bank as a cultural object.
